English Literature in Context: From Romanticism until the Late Twentieth Century
This book is primarily intended as an educational resource for undergraduate students of English literature who take the Survey of English Literature II (from Romanticism until the Late Twentieth Century) course, but it can also be a useful starting point for anyone interested in the history of English literature, and in the conceptual and socio-political context that shaped the literary production in the United Kingdom during the Romantic period, the Victorian Age, and the twentieth century. The content is based on lectures and seminar classes held by the author from 2007 until 2020, as well as on the extensive research of a very large body of primary and secondary works; the research results have been simplified and adapted to match the needs of undergraduate students taking this course. The aim of the textbook is not to provide interpretations of individual works, as it is assumed that literary texts will be discussed (analysed and interpreted) in class and in students’ research papers. Rather, this textbook aims to help situate specific literary periods within a larger historical context from a diachronic point of view, and to situate individual texts and authors within a specific literary period.
