Through the Looking Glass: BA Students’ Views on Popular Fiction
This volume comes about as an attempt to explore a number of different contexts within which the student(s) of literature and the professor of literature can work in a literature class: class discussions, oral reports, audio and video materials, and, especially, critical writing. In our case, critical writing on popular fiction. Papers discussing popular fiction genres collected in this volume were part of the 2017/2018 and 2018/2019 (research) paper assignments within the BA literature course Popular Fiction. All the topics, except the last that allowed students to “defend” popular reading interests of their own choice, concentrated on the popular fiction texts discussed, analysed, and interpreted in the course classes: Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, Divergent, Carrie, Bridget Jones’s Diary, and Murder on the Orient Express. The paper topics were so structured to help students develop critical reading skills by observing popular fiction through the lens of 1) trends and market demands that make fiction popular or unpopular, (2) its relation to “high” and “low” culture, and (3) its (de)construction of gender, race, class, and cultural identities.
