PROVERBS AND THEIR ILLUSTRATIONS IN THE THESAURUS PHILO-POLITIUCS

Abstract

The following article first presents the most comprehensive Latin-German emblem encyclopedia from the early 17th century. Then, using the example of one of the 16 parts (I, 4), the possibilities for visualizing proverbs are asked. Particular attention is paid to comparing the sometimes different text and image structures. The use of quotations is also taken into account. The various proverbs are listed in the appendix. The German Proverb Lexicon by Karl Friedrich Wilhelm Wander is crucial for identifying proverbs and proverbial sayings.
