Abstract

The background for this article is a joint research project in German linguistics at the Universities of Regensburg and Helsinki. The aim of the project is to create two historical valence dictionaries (one a historical syntactic verb dictionary and the other a small historical valence lexicon) that include all German language periods. The explanations in this article are largely based on the presentation method in the last-mentioned valence dictionary. The subject of the study is 12 verb phrases, whose occurrence and valence behavior is tracked in Old High German, Middle High German, Early New High German, New High German and Contemporary German. For each phrase, an overall valence is determined based on evidence from historical and modern dictionaries as well as from corpora of various types, in which both the number and the type of valence-related determinations (complements) are recorded. One of the most important findings of the analysis relates to the development of the genitive object: It is shown that, in addition to verbal one-word lexemes, verb phrasemes are also affected by the decline of the genitive as an object case, but that the genitive has been retained in certain phrases to this day. It also shows that in order to capture the overall valence of verb phrases as comprehensively as possible, extensive corpus research is required in addition to lexicographic descriptions.
